Alto Hotel on Bourke has achieved the prestigious Green Globe Certified Silver status under the Green Globe Earthcheck Certification programme managed by EC3 Global. The global programme recognises Alto Hotel on Bourke's commitment to operating at the world's highest environmental standard.
Prior to achieving Certification, Alto Hotel on Bourke successfully Benchmarked using the EarthcheckTM tool, against key environmental indicators including energy and water consumption, total waste production and community commitment.

Alto Hotel on Bourke chose to demonstrate their commitment to the environment by undertaking Certification – the highest level of the Green Globe programme as managed by EC3 Global. The Certification process involves either an onsite audit or offsite assessment by an EC3 Global approved independent third party Green Globe Auditor. The successful completion of the Certification process demonstrates Alto Hotel on Bourke's strong commitment to the principles of environmental sustainability.

Alto Hotel on Bourke is located in the centre of Melbourne's business district. The boutique Alto Hotel, which combines environmental construction technology and best practice initiatives with style, charm and a high level of comfort, has proven to be popular with business and leisure travellers many of whom have become fiercely loyal. The hotel is unique in that it proves that being eco friendly does not mean you have to "rough it" in a natural setting or use lower grade products and services to leave a smaller footprint. The building, which brings together classic architecture of late 19th century and a contemporary interior plus a range of inspired services, is rich in environmental features including, double insulation, staggered stud construction on all lightweight walls and ceilings, double glazed, tinted & laminated windows & 100% wind power, green electricity.
Other initiatives include dual chamber bin in all guest rooms providing the guest the opportunity to start their recycling process by sorting their waste. These bins are lined with biodegradable bags. All promotion pens are made from cornstarch and recycled paper is used for all marketing material and office supplies. Low energy lighting is used throughout the building including the latest LED globes in all rooms that use a mere 3.8 watts of electricity. Water usage is monitored and kept to minimum with the use of well designed bathrooms, vanity basins and shower heads. The two water tanks installed onsite catch any rainwater runoff from the hotel and reused for general cleaning and flushing of toilets.
