It's easy being green: energy-efficient TV from Sony arrives in Australia

It has never been more important to consider cutting down on energy use and reducing household energy bills. Sony's new energy-efficient TV has arrived in Australia to help consumers reduce their power consumption. The Sony TV - the BRAVIA WE5 - has been designed with unique energy-saving features, such as the "Presence Sensor" that automatically turns off the TV when no one is detected in the room.

This eco-friendly new BRAVIA model is digital ready and the ideal choice in preparing for the digital switchover. Awarded five energy stars (for the KDL46WE5 model), the WE5 reduces power consumption without compromising on picture quality.

"The WE5 consumes less power than two typical (75W) light bulbs, which translates into both significant cost and also energy savings for those consumers who have an eye on their environmental footprint," said Jan Ergen, Product Manager for Visual Display at Sony Australia. "With the digital switchover looming, the WE5 provides a more environmentally aware choice for consumers that want to upgrade to a high definition TV."

One of most energy-efficient HD televisions available, the BRAVIA WE5 consumes over 50 per cent less power than its predecessor and is available in two sizes (40 inch, 46 inch).

Key energy saving features

  • Presence Sensor: Out of sight, out of picture
  • Energy Saving Switch
  • World's first microtubular HCFL backlight
  • Enhanced picture quality

What would be more environmentally friendly would be if people were not so materialistic. If people used smaller TV's that would save even more money, its ridiculous to brand an energy hungry appliance green. 75 watts adds up.

Tom, the poor Sony man thinks it's good for a TV to use about 140 watts even with its fancy knick knacks at least one of which probably draws power unnecessarily. The little TVs I've seen run on 12 volts feeding from a nice warm portable transformer. Not sure that's an improvement either. Maybe abandoning TV altogether is the way to go after analogue dies. Walks are really nice in the evening after a hard day in the office.

Good point there Harry, I watch very little TV these days but these lower power usage TVs are a good improvement for heavy users compared to the older TVs. Some people, no matter how much you try and sway them will never get a small TV compared to the big screens.
